Review: Fallout Nuka Break (The Web Series)

Fooled you! I bet you thought I was going to review the official new Fallout series, didn’t you? Just to be contrary, I watched this unofficial fan series instead. Bottom line, it’s great and a must-see. Personally the jury has to wait for me to watch the official series before it gets to deliberate on that one.

This is a light-hearted series which you can find online strung together along with its associated series Tales from the Wasteland and The Wanderer. Created, produced by and starring Zack Finfrock, the thing premiered in 2011.

This is the story of three companions. Twig is a good-hearted vault-dweller who loves Nuka Cola. Ben is a ghoul who’s kind of, shall we say, pragmatic. Scar is a tough no-nonsense wasteland chick. They’re just looking for the next job. Got that?

You get all the trappings you’d expect from the Fallout setting. Pip-boy, V.A.T.S. targeting system, caps, stim-packs, raiders and traders.

This puppy was shot in Nevada, which is point-on. The story takes place in the area between the NCR and New Vegas. The look is amazing. The folks associated with the production did a fine job. Kickstarter helps.

So, what makes a good show? Like a good novel, you need character and plot and story. This show’s got ’em. Again, it’s light-hearted (after all we’re making a fan film based on a video game). Given that, the characters all have backstory that you’ll learn, and there’s even character development as they journey through the post-apocalypse.

It’s also got the look. In spades. Check those guys out. Also, the secondary characters are cool, and so are the props and locations.

C’mon dude, tell me you expected to actually see Super Mutants! And the scale works too.

Look familiar? Really, these guys were fans of the source material, and it shows.

They even got one of the chief developers from the game, Tim Cain, and one of the New Vegas writers, Chris Avellone, in supporting roles.

So do yourself a favor. Crack open a frosty Nuka Cola and watch these. Like me, I suspect you’ll want to fire up a game of Fallout soon after.

  1. Oh dear. So the sequel is not from Wayside Creations, the original production company. And there’s a reason. Apparently the folks connected with Nuka Break have all left, and it wasn’t amicable. Here is their announcement video, from back in 2016:

So, the Fallout: Breaking film that’s in the works (in my prior comment) isn’t connected with Wayside. Which sounds good to me.
